History and more events

Carnival has a long tradition in Bonn and “Alaaf” is the traditional way to give cheers to the 5th season. The female side of carnival, “Weiberfastnacht”, was born in 1824, when Bonn-Beuel’s washing women dropped their work and got together with coffee and cake - the birth of the first women’s committee in Beuel. The chairwoman (Obermöhn) and the washer princess lead the carnival offensive storming the Beuel town hall (this year on February 20, 11.11 am) and take over the power from the mayors. Normally the defenders are delighted to hand over the keys of the city hall in exchange for a kiss (“Bützchen”). The town halls in Bonn and Bad Godesberg district will be stormed on Carnival Sunday, February 23. The storm of the Old Town hall around noon is picturesque and fun at the time, with Prince and Bonna leading the “city soldiers” in their colorful uniforms against the mayor and his troops in their passionate defense of the city key.

Carnival revelers will parade through Bonn’s streets on Carnival Monday (Rosenmontag), February 24. Bonn’s biggest parade will begin at noon, featuring a colorful fleet with Prince Carnival Richard I and Bonna Katharina III.

BONNEXPAT is a special chance for expatriates to meet in a relaxed atmosphere while learning more about the city and all it has to offer. For further information, please visit our website at www.bonnexpat.com. Please note that photos and videos will be taken during the events and used for communication purposes by the organizing partners and that you agree to this by registering.

Our next BONNEXPAT evening will take place in June/July 2020 with a cultural highlight in the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany (Bundeskunsthalle).

We look forward to seeing you at BONNEXPAT!

Best regards, wishing you a great start into 2020 and three times Alaaf,

The BonnExpat-Organizers
